Student Loan Consolidation Rates

When most people think of Rates, what comes to mind is usually basic information that's not particularly interesting or beneficial. But there's a lot more to Student Loan Consolidation Rates than just the basics.

Federal Student Loan Consolidation Rates

Federal interest rates are based on the weighted average of student loan interest rates. Federal student loans you have received on or after July 1, 2006 have an interest rate of 6.8%*. Federal student loans that you have received before July 1, 2006 will always be variable interest rate loans. These loans will also always  re-adjust every July 1 based on the results of the 91-day Treasury Bill that was inacted. Following are the current interest rates for these variable type loans:

  • Stafford Loans where you are still in your grace period (1-6 months after graduating): 6.62%
  • Stafford Loans where you are in repayment period: 7.22%
  • Parent PLUS Loans which you have received after July 1, 1998 but before July 1, 2006 are: 8.02%
  • Parent PLUS Loans which you received after July 1, 2006 are now: 8.50%

Remember that the interest rates for Federal Stafford Subsidized and Unsubsidized Student Loans change every year, but they will never be over 8.25%, that is unless the federal government changes their policies to increase or decrease their rates.

Consolidation Loan Interest Rate Updates

There are many different places where you can Consolidate your loans and you will need to check with each source to determine what the rates will be.  The good news is if you go with a federal consolidation loan (provided your loans are federal), these rates are very close to each other no matter who you go through to get them.  This is because the federal government sets the rate which it offers and although private lenders can help you get federal loans, they cannot raise or lower the rates.  The first step is to submit your loan information via application so that you can be approved for federal consolidation.
